Growing, Clearly — Health Education Platform
A place where a teenager can type what is actually happening to them and get honest, sourced information — no account, no name, no shame.
01 — Overview
Growing, Clearly is a free health education site for young people covering puberty, periods, sexual health, mental health and everyday symptoms. It exists because the questions people actually have — the ones phrased the way they'd say them out loud — almost never match how medical content is written or organised.
02 — The Challenge
Three problems had to be solved at once. The language barrier: searching "burning when i pee" must return the right article. The safety problem: a symptom search must surface warning signs before anything reassuring. And the trust problem: the site has to be honest that it is not a diagnosis and that no clinician has reviewed the articles yet — without making the whole thing feel like a disclaimer wall.
03 — The Approach
Privacy as the default rather than a policy page: no account, no name, no email, and search that runs in the browser so nothing typed is ever sent to a server. Safety routing sits in front of search results, not behind a link. And honesty is built into the interface — every article states what it is and what it is not, in plain words.
04 — What I Built
- Ask tool that understands plain-language, misspelled questions and returns relevant topics
- Four-level safety triage layer — emergency, prompt assessment, general education and unclear — that suppresses article results on warning patterns rather than pushing them down the page
- Age-band pathways (10–12, 13–15, 16–19, 20–22) that tune depth and reading level without hiding safety content
- Structured health library across 24 topics with reading time, age range and source links on every article
- Question library of real questions people ask, each mapped to a full answer
- Editorial standards, safety rules, corrections and privacy pages that document how the site actually works
- Version-controlled articles with a visible change history so corrections are never silent
05 — Design Direction
Calm, plain and deliberately un-clinical. No stock imagery of smiling teenagers, no gamified streaks, no pressure. Comfortable type, generous spacing and a restrained palette — the design has to lower the temperature enough that someone can read about something embarrassing without feeling judged.
06 — User Experience
One path: ask → warnings first if warranted → articles with sources → a clear statement of what the site cannot do. Everything is reachable without an account, on a slow connection, on a small screen, and without reading anything you did not come for.
07 — Technical Work
Astro + Tailwind CSS on Cloudflare Pages. Structured content collections for the article library, client-side search with no query logging, a documented and tested routing layer for safety patterns, and full accessibility with keyboard navigation and reduced-motion support.
08 — Final Result
A health site that answers the question as it was asked, puts danger signs before comfort, and never pretends to be a doctor. It respects the person reading it — their privacy, their vocabulary and their right to know exactly how much to trust the page.
